Customers

AXT sells to semiconductor device makers and downstream manufacturers that need engineered wafers for opto-electronic, data center, consumer and other specialty applications. Its raw-material businesses also sell to industrial customers and third parties in China and other markets, while some output is consumed internally to support substrate production.

Tier one substrate customers

Large qualified customers that buy wafers for production programs and can represent more than 10% of revenue.

Opto-electronic device manufacturers

Buy GaAs and InP substrates for lasers, photonics and related components used in communications and sensing.

Data center and telecom infrastructure customers

Buy InP wafers for data center and passive optical network applications where performance and reliability matter.

Consumer electronics supply chain

Uses wafers in consumer applications; demand can be large but is vulnerable to project cancellations.

Raw-material and industrial customers

Buy gallium, arsenic, germanium, pBN crucibles and related materials from AXT's China-based ventures.

Strategy

AXT is focused on improving manufacturing yields, reducing unit costs and maintaining competitiveness in wafer substrates despite pricing pressure. It is also pursuing new product and application opportunities, including InP wafers for AI-related uses, while expanding or ramping production at new sites and qualifying customers for those locations.

Manufacturing yield and cost improvementShort term

Higher yields and lower costs are needed to offset pricing pressure and support gross margin.

New application developmentMedium term

New end markets can offset cyclical demand in existing wafer programs and broaden the customer base.

Capacity and site ramp-upMedium term

New manufacturing locations can expand supply capability and help win customer qualifications.

Raw-material supply integrationLong term

Control over gallium and related inputs helps secure supply and manage cost volatility.

Geography

Q1/2026

AXT is operationally centered in China, where it has raw-material investments and manufacturing exposure, while revenue is also generated across Taiwan, Europe, Japan and North America. In the latest quarter, China was the largest revenue region at 69%, followed by Europe at 11%, with North America at 6%, showing a business that is heavily exposed to Asia-based supply chains and demand cycles.

Risks

AXT is exposed to customer concentration, project cancellations and order push-outs because its wafers are sold into qualified, application-specific programs. Its China-heavy operating footprint adds geopolitical, regulatory, tariff, environmental shutdown and foreign-exchange risk, while raw-material ventures create supply-chain and partner-dependency risk.

Sorted by severity
LowMediumHighLowMediumHighImpact →Likelihood →Order push-outs and cancellations1China regulatory and geopolitical exposure2Customer concentration3Raw-material partner dependency4Environmental shutdown risk in China5Foreign exchange volatility6
Impact is the risk’s severity and likelihood how probable it is over the next few years, both assessed from the company’s reports. Numbers match the list.
  1. Order push-outs and cancellationsImpact: HighLikelihood: High

Customers are not obligated to buy fixed volumes or provide binding forecasts, making revenue volatile.

    Exposure: All product lines

  2. China regulatory and geopolitical exposureImpact: HighLikelihood: High

The company has major operations and raw-material investments in China, where rules can change quickly and trade barriers can disrupt business.

    Exposure: Manufacturing and raw materials

  3. Customer concentrationImpact: HighLikelihood: Medium

One or more tier one customers can exceed 10% of revenue, so losing a major account would reduce sales sharply.

    Exposure: Substrate business

  4. Raw-material partner dependencyImpact: HighLikelihood: Medium

Shared facilities and partner operations can interrupt gallium and other material supply, forcing higher-cost sourcing.

    Exposure: China raw-material ventures

  5. Environmental shutdown risk in ChinaImpact: MediumLikelihood: Medium

Pollution controls or mandatory shutdowns can reduce utilization and gross margins.

    Exposure: China manufacturing sites

  6. Foreign exchange volatilityImpact: MediumLikelihood: Low

Global operations and cross-border sales expose results to currency swings.

    Exposure: International sales and costs

Accounting

Judgemental items
Revenue recognition and shipment timing

Quarterly results can swing when customers delay, cancel or accelerate wafer orders.

Impact: Affects reported revenue and gross margin comparability

Income tax valuation and foreign tax judgments

Deferred tax assets and liabilities depend on realizability and complex China tax rules.

Impact: Can change tax expense and effective tax rate

Consolidation and equity accounting for China ventures

Some raw-material companies are consolidated while others are equity-accounted, affecting reported assets, revenue and earnings.

Impact: Can materially affect balance sheet and operating results

Stock-based compensation

Expense is allocated across cost of revenue, R&D and SG&A and depends on estimates of forfeitures and vesting.

Impact: Affects operating margin and expense trends

Foreign exchange effects

Cross-border operations create translation and transaction exposure in multiple currencies.

Impact: Can move reported earnings independent of underlying demand
