Financial data MCP: filing data in Claude and ChatGPT in 3 steps

A financial data MCP connects Claude or ChatGPT to company filings so answers cite their source. Three setup steps, four starter prompts and a worked Walmart example.

A financial data MCP gives Claude or ChatGPT direct access to company filings: ask about revenue, margins or guidance, and the assistant fetches the reported figure and cites the filing it came from. Setup takes three steps: enable the app, sign in, and ask a question that names the company and the period.

This guide shows those steps using Clarifo, our financial data product for US and Nordic listed companies, which is available as a built-in app in Claude and ChatGPT. It then gives four prompts to start with and one worked example with real figures for Walmart Inc. (Nasdaq: WMT).

What a financial data MCP adds to Claude and ChatGPT

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard Claude and ChatGPT use to call external tools. Without a tool, an assistant answers financial questions from its training data, which has a cut-off date and no page references. With a financial data MCP connected, the assistant calls a tool, receives the reported figure with its filing, and writes the answer from that.

Our app gives the assistant read-only access to 7,000+ public companies in the United States, Finland and Sweden. That covers income statement, balance sheet and cash flow in one consistent shape across companies and periods, reported segments and regional splits, and full filings with searchable sections, including 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings for US companies.

How to connect a financial data MCP in three steps

The three cards below are the whole setup; it is the same in Claude and in ChatGPT.

Turn on the Clarifo app

Clarifo is a built-in app in Claude and ChatGPT. Find it in the assistant's apps or connectors list and enable it with one click. Current instructions are on our MCP page.

Connect your Clarifo account

Sign in with your Clarifo account when the assistant asks. A 7-day trial is available on the pricing page if you do not have an account yet.

Ask with a company and a period

Name the company and the period you want, and ask for the source. The assistant calls our tools and returns figures with links to the filings.

The MCP server can read filings and figures but cannot change anything. Enabling it gives the assistant a data source, not permission to act on your behalf.

Four starter prompts for filing-based answers

Each prompt names a company, a period and the kind of source you expect. Copy them as they are or swap in your own company.

Using Clarifo, give me Walmart's revenue, operating income, net income and diluted EPS for its latest reported quarter and the same quarter a year earlier. State the fiscal quarter, the period end date and the filing for each figure.

Using Clarifo, find what Walmart's latest 10-Q says about the Walmart International segment's net sales growth. Quote the passage and link the page.

Using Clarifo, compare Walmart and Costco on revenue, operating margin and net margin for their last three fiscal years. Note that their fiscal years end in different months.

Using Clarifo, list the filings Walmart has made in the last 12 months, with form type, period and filing date.

The pattern is the same in all four: a named company, an explicit period and a request for the source. That combination is what makes the assistant call a tool instead of answering from memory.

Worked example: Walmart's latest quarter from the 10-Q

Here is the answer to the first prompt. Walmart's fiscal year ends on 31 January, so the quarter ended 31 July 2026 is the second quarter of fiscal 2027. The figures come from Walmart's Form 10-Q for that quarter and from the 10-Q for the same quarter a year earlier.

The table compares Walmart's second quarter of fiscal 2027 with the second quarter of fiscal 2026.

Walmart (USD millions)Q2 FY2026 (ended 31 Jul 2025)Q2 FY2027 (ended 31 Jul 2026)
Revenue177,402187,937
Operating income7,2869,383
Net income7,0266,366
Diluted EPS (USD)0.880.80

Source: Walmart Inc. Forms 10-Q for the quarters ended 31 July 2026 (accession 0000104169-26-000154) and 31 July 2025 (accession 0000104169-25-000137), reported XBRL financial data.12

Revenue rose about 5.9% year on year (our calculation from reported figures: 187,937 / 177,402). Operating income rose, but net income and diluted EPS were lower than a year earlier. The figures alone do not explain that gap between operating and net profit; the next step is to ask the assistant to search the 10-Q for the items below operating income, which is what the second type of prompt is for.

The second prompt shows what a text answer looks like. For the previous quarter, the answer quoted this passage from Walmart's 10-Q for the quarter ended 30 April 2026 (Q1 FY2027): Walmart International net sales were $35,110 million, an increase of 18.0%, which the filing attributes in part to eCommerce growth of $2.0 billion and currency movements of $2.3 billion.3 Each passage comes with the section and a link to the filing on SEC EDGAR.

The figures show what changed. The filing text explains why.

Common setup mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Asking without naming the app. If several tools are enabled, say "using Clarifo" so the assistant calls our data rather than a web search.
  • Leaving the period open. "Latest quarter" works, but check that the answer states the period end date. Walmart's quarter ending in July covers different calendar months from Apple's or Microsoft's latest quarter.
  • Accepting a figure without a link. If the answer has no filing reference, ask for it. Every figure in our data carries one.
  • Mixing currencies. When you compare a US company with a Nordic one, figures stay in each company's reporting currency (USD, EUR or SEK). Ask for ratios if you want them side by side.

For more on how the app behaves in each assistant, see Clarifo in ChatGPT and how to use Clarifo in Claude for company research. If you want the same data in your own code, our Data API returns it as REST and JSON.

Enable Clarifo in Claude or ChatGPT and ask your first question about a US or Nordic company. Every figure comes back with its filing.
