A long-term care reserve update drove most of the earnings drop

Net income was $196 million, or $0.72 per diluted share, against $403 million, or $1.48, a year earlier 8-K. Core income, which excludes net investment losses, was $203 million against $409 million 8-K. Life Group's core loss widened to $171 million from $22 million, reflecting a $137 million after-tax unfavorable impact from the annual reserve assumption updates, mainly cost of care inflation and morbidity, partly offset by premium rate action 8-K.

Management says the charge is almost entirely offset by a favorable economic impact from recent investment portfolio actions, which GAAP recognizes through net investment income over time rather than now 8-K. That is management's framing. The earnings hit is booked now, and the offset is not yet in reported results.

P&C underlying margins narrowed and rate did not cover the gap

P&C core income fell 12.9% to $397 million 8-K. The combined ratio rose 4.2 points to 97.0%, with catastrophe losses of $78 million (2.8 points) against $41 million (1.5 points) 8-K. The underlying combined ratio rose 2.9 points to 94.2%, as the underlying loss ratio rose 2.2 points to 64.1% 8-K. Net prior period development was nil 8-K.

Written rate rose 2% and renewal premium change was 3%, with rate decreases in property, workers' compensation and International offsetting higher casualty and Specialty rate 8-K. Net written premiums grew 3% with retention at 83% 8-K. In my reading, a 2% rate gain against a loss ratio up 2.2 points leaves little room for margin recovery 8-K.

Commercial carries the deterioration, and International's reserve release masks it

Commercial's combined ratio rose 7.0 points to 99.7%, with underwriting gain of $3 million against $106 million 8-K. Its underlying loss ratio rose 2.4 points, mainly in excess casualty and workers' compensation, and unfavorable development added 2.4 points 8-K. International's combined ratio improved to 86.1% on 10.1 points of favorable development, while its underlying combined ratio rose 2.9 points to 94.1% 8-K. The reserve moves net to zero for P&C overall, so the underlying trend is the better guide 8-K.

What to watch next

  • How quickly the investment portfolio actions management cites show up in Life Group net investment income, given the $137 million after-tax reserve charge 8-K.

  • Whether rate gains in casualty and Specialty can offset rate decreases elsewhere and an underlying loss ratio of 64.1%, as management plans to deploy capacity selectively into 2027 8-K.

The release does not give operating cash flow or long-term care reserve balance and sensitivities.
