The profit decline is a comparison with last year's investment gains

Net income was $459 million, or $2.96 per share, against $1.122 billion, or $7.11, a year earlier 8-K. After-tax investment gains were $16 million against $673 million 8-K. Pretax, unrealized gains on equity securities still held were $1 million against $855 million 8-K.

Non-GAAP operating income, a company-defined measure that excludes investment gains, was $443 million ($2.86 per share) against $449 million ($2.85) 8-K. Pretax investment income rose 10% to $325 million, helped by an 11% rise in bond interest income 8-K.

A reserve release cushioned a catastrophe-heavy quarter

The property casualty combined ratio rose to 90.9% from 88.2% a year earlier, including a 7.0-point increase from catastrophe losses 8-K. Current accident year catastrophe losses were 10.8% of earned premiums against 4.4% 8-K. Favorable prior-year reserve development was $94 million, a 3.6-point benefit, against $22 million and 0.9 points a year earlier 8-K. This suggests the release absorbed part of the catastrophe hit.

The current accident year combined ratio before catastrophes improved to 83.7% from 84.7% a year earlier 8-K. On a nine-month basis the combined ratio was 95.8% against 98.4% a year earlier, within management's 92% to 98% long-term target 8-K.

New business shrank and book value fell on bond marks

Property casualty net written premiums grew 2%, but agency new business premiums fell 12% to $315 million 8-K. Personal lines new business dropped 34%, a $40 million decline that management ties to careful underwriting in a highly competitive market 8-K.

Book value per share fell $3.22 in the quarter to $105.42, as investment losses outweighed earnings 8-K. The change in unrealized gains and losses on fixed maturities and short-term investments was negative $1.162 billion 8-K. The quarterly value creation ratio was negative 2.1% against 8.9% a year earlier, and the nine-month ratio was 5.8% against 13.8% 8-K.

What to watch next

  • Whether personal lines new business, down 34% in the quarter, stabilizes while management keeps underwriting each policy carefully 8-K.

  • Whether the combined ratio holds inside the 92% to 98% target if reserve releases are smaller than this quarter's $94 million 8-K.

The release does not give operating cash flow, share repurchases or full-year outlook.
