AGNC Investment Q3 2026: spread income stayed positive, but book value took the hit

Updated: October 21, 2026

The quarter was not an earnings miss so much as a mark-to-market shock. AGNC's company-defined spread income stayed positive and prepayment dynamics improved, but the business still produced a -12.7% economic return as Agency MBS weakness hit tangible book value hard 8-K.

Book value, not carry, drove the quarter

AGNC reported a comprehensive loss available to common stockholders of $(1.28) per share, including a net loss of $(1.17) per share, while economic return on tangible common equity was -12.7% 8-K. The release ties that directly to fixed income market pressure late in September, with sharply higher rates and higher rate volatility driving pronounced weakness in Agency MBS, which management said was the worst performing sector of the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index during the quarter 8-K.

That showed up most clearly in tangible net book value per common share, which fell to $7.13 from $8.58 at June 30, down 16.9% 8-K. The main P&L driver was a $(1,731) million loss in other gain (loss), net, including $(5,015) million of net unrealized losses on investment securities measured at fair value through net income, partly offset by $2,052 million of net gains on interest rate swaps and $1,228 million of net gains on U.S 8-K. Treasury positions 8-K.

Underlying spread earnings were steadier than GAAP results imply

The cleaner read on current portfolio earnings is the company-defined net spread and dollar roll income of $0.37 per common share, up from $0.35 a year earlier but down from $0.40 in the prior quarter 8-K. That quarterly decline came even though actual portfolio CPR was 8.2%, down from 13.0% in the prior quarter, because the annualized net interest spread excluding catch-up premium amortization was 1.86%, down from 2.00% in the prior quarter as average total cost of funds rose to 3.09% from 2.89% 8-K.

The quality of that spread result is mixed. Reported net spread and dollar roll income was $0.37 per share excluding a $0.05 per share catch-up premium amortization benefit from lower CPR projections 8-K. The operating backdrop did improve in one important way: projected CPR for the remaining life of Agency securities fell to 6.7% from 8.6% at June 30, which supports management's argument that prepayment risk has declined as higher rates reduce refinance incentive 8-K.

AGNC leaned into liquidity and capital while tightening hedges

AGNC exited the quarter with tangible net book value at-risk leverage of 7.9x, up from 7.4x at June 30, and $6.3 billion of unencumbered cash and Agency MBS, equal to 57% of tangible equity 8-K. It also issued 97.6 million common shares through its ATM program for net proceeds of $992 million, which management said it did at a significant premium to tangible net book value during elevated trading volumes after the company's addition to the S&P MidCap 400 Index 8-K.

Risk positioning also shifted. Net TBA exposure fell to $2.4 billion from $9.7 billion at June 30, while hedges rose to 90% of funding liabilities from 73%, or 97% excluding option-based hedges versus 82% previously 8-K. That suggests AGNC finished the quarter with more conservative market exposure, although the release does not provide cash flow detail or the fuller risk discussion that would come with a 10-Q 8-K.

What to watch next

  • Whether Agency MBS volatility actually subsides enough for management's constructive outlook to translate into book value stability 8-K.

  • Whether spread income can hold as funding costs rose to 3.09% and leverage increased to 7.9x at quarter-end 8-K.
