Nordic financial data API: coverage, periods and units explained

A Nordic financial data API has to handle IFRS, EUR and SEK reporting, half-year reports and year-to-date columns. We explain each, using KONE and Atlas Copco's Q3 2026 reports.

A Nordic financial data API returns the reported figures of companies listed on Nasdaq Helsinki and Nasdaq Stockholm, which report under IFRS, mostly in EUR (Finland) or SEK (Sweden), on a quarterly or half-yearly rhythm. Using one well means knowing which currency, period and scale each figure is in, because Nordic reports differ from US filings on all three.

We serve these figures through our Data API and in Claude and ChatGPT, in the same shape as our US company data. This article explains coverage, periods and units, with the Q3 2026 reports of KONE Oyj (KNEBV, Nasdaq Helsinki) and Atlas Copco AB (ATCO A, Nasdaq Stockholm) as the worked example.

Which Nordic companies a financial data API should cover

We cover NYSE and Nasdaq companies in the United States and companies listed on Nasdaq Helsinki and Nasdaq Stockholm: more than 7,000 public companies in total, with more markets being added. You can browse the Nordic lists on our Nasdaq Helsinki and Nasdaq Stockholm pages.

There is no single filing database for Finnish and Swedish issuers comparable to SEC EDGAR. Their sources are the interim reports, half-year reports, financial statements releases and annual reports they publish as stock exchange releases, plus the annual report in ESEF format. Each figure we return comes from one of these documents and links to the report and page it was taken from.

IFRS consolidated figures, and what "operating profit" means

Listed Nordic groups prepare consolidated statements under IFRS. Until IFRS 18 takes effect, IFRS does not define an operating profit subtotal, so the operating profit line, the use of EBIT or EBITA, and the alternative performance measures next to them vary by company.

KONE is a good example. For July to September 2026 it reported operating income of EUR 339.0 million and, as an alternative performance measure, adjusted EBIT of EUR 369.0 million. The difference comes from items affecting comparability, which KONE says amounted to EUR 88.3 million for January to September 2026, including EUR 48.5 million of costs relating to the TKE transaction.1 A Nordic financial data API should tell you which of the two lines it returns as EBIT. In our data, KONE's Q3 2026 EBIT is the IFRS operating income of EUR 339.0 million, not the adjusted figure.

EUR versus SEK: reporting currency is per company

Most Helsinki companies report in EUR and most Stockholm companies in SEK, but the reporting currency is the company's choice, so read it from the data, not from the exchange. We return each company's figures in its own reporting currency and do not convert between currencies. KONE's revenue is in EUR, Atlas Copco's in SEK; comparing the two in absolute terms requires an exchange rate you choose and document. Margins and return ratios can be compared directly.

Quarterly, half-year and year-to-date periods in Nordic reports

EU rules no longer require quarterly reports, so some Nordic companies publish a half-year report plus shorter business reviews for the first and third quarters, while others, including both companies in our example, publish full quarterly interim reports. The fourth quarter usually arrives in a financial statements release (in Sweden, the year-end report) weeks before the annual report.

Nordic income statements also print the quarter and the year to date side by side. KONE's key figures table shows 7–9/2026 next to 1–9/2026; Atlas Copco's income statement shows July–September next to the nine-month figure. An API has to keep the two apart. Our quarterly data holds discrete quarters, and a quarter that had to be derived carries its formula, for example a second quarter computed as the half year minus the first quarter.

Units and number formats: MEUR, MSEK and space separators

Nordic reports state the scale in the table header (MEUR, MSEK) and use local number formats. Atlas Copco prints revenues as "47 920" in MSEK, with a space as the thousands separator; Finnish-language reports use a decimal comma. We return values in full units with the currency attached, so 47 920 MSEK becomes 47,920,000,000 SEK.

Worked example: KONE and Atlas Copco in Q3 2026

The table below shows each company's quarter ended 30 September 2026 next to the same quarter a year earlier, in its own reporting currency.

KONE reported sales growth of 5.2% for the quarter; its year-to-date sales for January to September 2026 were EUR 8,552.0 million. Atlas Copco's nine-month revenues were SEK 133,434 million, against SEK 125,561 million a year earlier. Those year-to-date numbers sit in the same tables as the quarter, which is why the period flag matters.

KONE's report also states that the 2025 comparison figures for order book have been restated. When a comparative changes, the later report's version is the one to compare against.

How to query Nordic figures through our Data API

Our Data API is standard REST with JSON and an OpenAPI spec, and it returns income statement, balance sheet and cash flow in one consistent shape across companies and periods. A request for one company, fiscal year and quarter looks like GET /api/v1/data/companies/AAPL/financials?year=2025&quarter=3. The identifiers accepted for Helsinki and Stockholm companies, and the response fields, are in our API docs. Keys start with clf_ and are sent as a bearer token; you can also compare up to five companies or rank a market by growth or size.

Because IFRS reporters label lines differently, the accounting change coming in 2027 matters too: IFRS 18 will change how operating profit is presented, and comparisons across that change need the same care as currency and period.
