Research cut-off: 3 November 2026. Figures are reported-period data, not live prices.
Financial statement analysis with AI begins by linking profit, financial position and cash movements—not by producing a summary of the income statement alone. Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT) reported $92.279 billion of revenue, $45.915 billion of operating income and $36.629 billion of net income in Q1 FY2027, the quarter ended 30 September 2026. Its earlier FY2026 annual cash flow statement gives the context for investment spending.12
Step 1: fix the fiscal period and accounting basis
The same company can report a calendar-quarter date that belongs to a different fiscal year. For Microsoft, September 2026 is Q1 FY2027. Write the exact quarter-end beside every figure; never join it to a different company's Q1 without checking that company's fiscal calendar. Separate quarterly and annual cash flows, and never multiply one quarter's net income by four as though the business has no seasonality.
| Metric | Q1 FY2027 | Comparison basis |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, USD billions | 92.279 | Three months to 30 Sep 2026 |
| Operating income, USD billions | 45.915 | GAAP |
| Net income, USD billions | 36.629 | GAAP |
| Operating margin | 49.8% | 45.915 ÷ 92.279 |
Step 2: ask where the margin came from
The reported operating margin is approximately 49.8%. The useful AI question is not merely whether it is 'good' but which cost categories, business mix and one-time items explain it. Ask for the same quarter a year earlier, have the assistant cite the operating-expense lines, and distinguish a comparable period from a sequential quarter. If an exact historical line is unavailable, mark the comparison incomplete rather than filling it from memory.1
Step 3: map earnings onto the balance sheet
Profit can rise while receivables absorb cash, inventories increase or liabilities change. Ask the assistant to retrieve cash and investments, debt, receivables, deferred revenue and long-lived assets from the same balance-sheet date. The balance sheet is a stock of assets and obligations on one day; the income statement measures flows over a period. Mixing the two without saying so produces meaningless ratios.
Step 4: follow the cash, including investment spending
Microsoft's audited FY2026 statement reports $182.935 billion in operating cash flow and $115.948 billion in capital expenditures, leaving $66.987 billion after subtracting those two lines. FY2025's corresponding figures were $136.162 billion, $64.551 billion and $71.611 billion. The key insight is that earnings and operating cash can improve while a capex-heavy investment cycle compresses the simple residual cash measure.2
This is an annual-versus-annual comparison: do not splice those FY2026 annual totals directly into the separate Q1 FY2027 income statement. Obtain the interim statement's own year-to-date cash-flow figures before drawing a quarter-specific conclusion.
Step 5: make the model challenge its own conclusions
Require a second answer listing contradictory signals and unavailable data. Is earnings growth helped by tax or investment items? Are leases or finance arrangements outside a narrowly defined capex figure? Are cash flow lines cumulative year to date rather than discrete quarterly amounts? An analyst should read the notes and reporting definitions rather than assume one standard notion of 'free cash flow' applies everywhere.
What a reliable AI-generated analysis should deliver
The output should contain a short thesis, a period-labelled key figures table, a ratio bridge, at least one quantified downside or alternative interpretation, and primary-source links beside material claims. Ask the assistant to specify which statements are reported, which are calculated and which are forecasts. Use Clarifo to retrieve the underlying filing passages and check them before adopting any judgment.
The latest cash-flow bridge: what income alone misses
The most recent quarter enables a complete, matching-period test rather than an annual cash-flow illustration attached to a quarterly income statement. In Q1 FY2027, Microsoft reported $36.629 billion of GAAP net income, $58.000 billion of operating cash flow and $39.367 billion in additions to property and equipment. For the September 2025 comparison quarter, the corresponding figures were $27.747 billion, $45.057 billion and $19.394 billion. The difference between operating cash and cash property additions therefore fell about 27.4%, even as earnings rose.Q1 FY2027
| Metric, USD billions | Q1 FY2027 | Q1 FY2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Net income | 36.629 | 27.747 |
| Operating cash flow | 58.000 | 45.057 |
| Cash additions to property/equipment | 39.367 | 19.394 |
| Operating cash flow less cash additions* | 18.633 | 25.663 |
The operating cash flow increase of about 28.7% reflects not just accounting profit but also the cash-flow reconciliation and working-capital movements. The company showed a $17.104 billion positive receivables movement in the quarter, against a $5.942 billion negative unearned-revenue movement, among other adjustments. These values are components in the indirect cash-flow presentation, not separate profits that can be added to net income.Q1 FY2027
A balance-sheet cross-check that changes the investment question
Cash and cash equivalents were $20.281 billion at 30 September 2026 versus $20.935 billion at the June 2026 year-end. That is a change between two balance-sheet dates, not a year-over-year cash comparison. The cash flow statement reports $58 billion of operating cash generation and substantial investing and financing uses; the balance sheet reveals the resulting cash stock. Neither statement alone identifies all accessible liquidity because Microsoft also has short-term investments, borrowing capacity and obligations.Q1 FY2027
Counterview: a falling simple residual cash measure is not proof that the investment is wasteful. Data-center capacity may earn returns over years rather than in the construction quarter. But it also makes return on invested capital and commitments more important to future analysis. We would watch Azure demand, the growth in depreciable assets, finance-lease additions and deferred revenue before interpreting a short-term cash-flow compression as a permanent deterioration.
The key technique is to compare matching quarters, label each cash-flow component and explain why net income and cash use diverge. AI is most useful here as a reproducible filing reader, not as a substitute for that judgment.
