ASML Holding N.V.: ASML's third quarter showed how strong chipmaking demand can manifest first as a capacity problem. The company reported €11.7 billion of net sales and a 57.5% gross margin. It also warned that its planned supply in 2027 and 2028 might not fully meet customer demand, prompting additional capacity investigations.1
The figures behind the headline
ASML reported €11.662 billion of Q3 net sales, up from €9.326 billion in Q2, and a 57.5% gross margin versus 54.0% previously. The change reflects a larger equipment-delivery quarter, not simply an increase in requests for machines. New lithography systems sold rose from 86 to 113 units, while used systems increased from five to eight.1
Installed Base Management sales rose from €2.762 billion to €3.289 billion sequentially. These services, upgrades and productivity enhancements relate to equipment that customers already use, in contrast to the initial delivery of new lithography systems. They can therefore follow a different revenue and profitability schedule from a new-system ramp.1
The reported financial picture
The primary source is the October 14, 2026 earnings announcement for Calendar Q3 2026; EUR. The amounts below use the company's published definitions, with non-GAAP measures explicitly labelled.1
| Metric | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Quarterly net sales | €11.7B |
| Gross margin | 57.5% |
| Net income | €5.0B |
| Installed base management | €3.3B |
| Q4 sales outlook | €14.2B–€15.2B |
The manufacturing lead time changes the investment story
ASML's machinery is used upstream of semiconductor production. Orders can reflect customers' future factory plans rather than chips already sold to end users. Revenue recognition also depends on delivery and acceptance conditions; demand is not the same as current-period sales.
Installed Base Management sales reached about €3.3 billion in the quarter, showing the importance of productivity upgrades and support for equipment already installed. Those revenues have different drivers from the delivery of new lithography systems.1
A longer cycle can improve visibility and complicate forecasts
Management said some customers were interested in orders extending to 2029 or 2030. The statement provides useful demand context, but it should not be represented as recognized revenue or a guaranteed order book of that amount.1
An investor evaluating margins should distinguish equipment mix, services, upgrades and the cost of expanding manufacturing capacity. ASML's full-year outlook of €44–45 billion in net sales is a forecast, while the quarter's €11.7 billion is a reported result.1
Financial performance and demand indicators have different recognition and cash-flow timing. For a responsible comparison, distinguish reported revenue from orders or guidance, and use the same reporting basis and period.
What the accounting disclosures add
The release's €5.0 billion of net income is strong, but the order pipeline and the time needed to ship and install EUV equipment require separate analysis. Management described customers requesting equipment further into the future and examined capacity constraints in 2027 and 2028. Such discussions are demand indicators, not financial revenue already earned.1
The financial statements in ASML's quarterly investor package are explicitly published on a US GAAP basis, although the group also prepares statutory IFRS reporting. The earlier draft's blanket characterization of ASML's quarterly income statement as IFRS was therefore misleading. The updated article identifies the accounting basis of each referenced document instead of treating them as identical.
The limits of the comparison
Clarifo's ADR/SEC quarterly dataset did not return Q3 2026 for ASML in this request. Accordingly, the chart and conclusions here use ASML's original Q3 investor release, not fictional Clarifo quarterly numbers. The next result should be evaluated using system sales, installed-base services, gross margin and factory capacity changes.1
The primary quarterly earnings package includes US GAAP consolidated financial statements. ASML also reports under IFRS in other statutory contexts; do not mix the accounting bases.
Units refer to new lithography systems sold. Used systems (five in Q2, eight in Q3) are excluded. A sale is not identical to an order intake.1
What comes next
Watch the split between new systems and installed-base services, gross margin, capacity announcements and the date when equipment orders turn into revenue.
For the wider investor debate, see community discussion on Reddit. Those opinions helped select the research question; they do not verify the company's financial statements. The primary source remains the original results announcement.
A deeper comparison should examine the cash-flow statement and operating commitments as well as the income statement. ASML Holding N.V. on Clarifo provides a starting point for finding historical financial data and filing sources. In related industries, investors should also separate the profitability of equipment suppliers from the return earned by the companies purchasing their products.
ASML's statements are in euros and use IFRS. Bookings, physical equipment deliveries and revenue recognized under accounting standards are distinct measures.
