AbbVie Inc. (NYSE: ABBV) reported $2.37 in GAAP diluted earnings per share for Q3 2026 and $3.82 in company-defined adjusted diluted EPS. The $1.45 difference comes from specified reconciliation items, but one acquisition-related expense remains in both measures: acquired in-process research and development (IPR&D) and milestone costs reduced each EPS figure by $0.11. Understanding that distinction matters when comparing pharmaceutical earnings across quarters or companies. 1
Adjusted EPS excludes specified items, not every acquisition expense
AbbVie's October 30, 2026 earnings release covers the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Net revenues reached $17.404 billion, up 10.3% from $15.776 billion in Q3 2025. GAAP operating earnings rose from $1.904 billion to $6.267 billion. Both are reported changes, but the comparison also reflects a much smaller acquired IPR&D and milestone charge in the latest quarter. 1
AbbVie recognised $216 million of acquired IPR&D and milestone expense in Q3 2026 versus $2.680 billion a year earlier. The $2.464 billion reduction mechanically improves the year-on-year operating-earnings comparison, but it does not explain the entire operating-profit change. Sales, product mix and other costs also moved. The earlier expense was a reported cost, not an accounting error. 1
GAAP operating margin increased from 12.1% to 36.0%, while the company's adjusted operating margin increased from 30.9% to 48.7%. Both improved, but the definitions differ. Comparing a GAAP margin in one quarter with an adjusted margin in another would produce a misleading trend. 1
AbbVie's acquired IPR&D expense remains in both EPS measures, while other acquisition-related costs are adjusted out.
What the numbers show
The table follows AbbVie's reported metric names and compares the quarters ended September 30, 2026 and 2025. Figures are in USD millions except margins and per-share values. 1
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Net revenues, USD million | 17,404 | 15,776 |
| Operating earnings (GAAP), USD million | 6,267 | 1,904 |
| Acquired IPR&D and milestones, USD million | 216 | 2,680 |
| GAAP operating margin | 36.0% | 12.1% |
| Adjusted operating margin (non-GAAP) | 48.7% | 30.9% |
| Diluted EPS attributable to AbbVie, USD/share | 2.37 | 0.10 |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (non-GAAP), USD/share | 3.82 | 1.86 |
Reported and adjusted figures are different measures. Acquired IPR&D and milestone costs remain in both reported and adjusted EPS in these quarters.
To reconstruct the 2026 bridge, start with GAAP diluted EPS of $2.37. AbbVie adds $0.79 per share for intangible asset amortisation, $0.22 for acquisition and integration costs and $0.46 for the change in fair value of contingent consideration. Its 'Other' category reduces the adjustment by $0.02. The result is adjusted diluted EPS of $3.82. The figures are after-tax per-share adjustments, not cash-flow amounts. 1
| Q3 2026 EPS reconciliation | USD/share |
|---|---|
| As reported (GAAP) | 2.37 |
| Intangible asset amortisation | +0.79 |
| Acquisition and integration costs | +0.22 |
| Change in fair value of contingent consideration | +0.46 |
| Other specified items | −0.02 |
| As adjusted (non-GAAP) | 3.82 |
Calculation: $2.37 + $0.79 + $0.22 + $0.46 − $0.02 = $3.82. Acquired IPR&D's $0.11 EPS impact is not an adjustment in this bridge because it remains in both measures.
In absolute terms, the reconciliation adds $3.037 billion of pre-tax specified items, taking earnings before tax from $4.829 billion under GAAP to $7.866 billion on the adjusted basis. The largest pre-tax items are $1.669 billion of intangible asset amortisation and $829 million from contingent-consideration fair-value changes. Acquisition and integration costs contribute another $408 million. Tax effects mean the after-tax bridge is different. 1
Contingent consideration deserves particular attention in acquisitive pharmaceutical companies. Changes in the estimated value of a future deal-related payment can affect reported earnings even when cash settlement occurs in another period. AbbVie excludes its $829 million pre-tax Q3 fair-value change from adjusted earnings. That accounting adjustment does not make the underlying acquisition obligation irrelevant to valuation. 1
Acquired IPR&D receives different treatment. AbbVie says the $216 million Q3 2026 expense had an after-tax impact of $205 million, or $0.11 per share, on both GAAP and adjusted diluted EPS. In Q3 2025 the corresponding EPS impact was $1.50 in both measures. Thus, comparing $3.82 with the prior year's $1.86 does not eliminate the effect of sharply different deal-related research charges. 1
Underlying drug revenue also improved. Q3 2026 Skyrizi revenue rose 22.7% to $5.776 billion, and Rinvoq rose 23.9% to $2.706 billion, while Humira fell 31.2% to $683 million. Skyrizi and Rinvoq together generated $8.482 billion, about 48.7% of total quarterly net revenues by calculation. This business mix provides evidence of commercial growth alongside the accounting-related changes in earnings. 1
When comparing adjusted EPS, inspect the issuer's reconciliation and footnotes. Identify which expenses are added back, which remain in both measures, the tax treatment and whether the prior-year quarter included unusual deal-related charges. Adjusted EPS is not a universal definition of recurring profit or a substitute for cash flow.
What comes next
AbbVie raised full-year 2026 adjusted diluted EPS guidance to $13.95–$13.99 from $13.76–$13.96. The new range includes a $0.69 per-share adverse impact from acquired IPR&D and milestone costs incurred through Q3. It does not estimate such costs beyond Q3 because the company says their amount and timing cannot be reliably predicted. 1
The release does not reconcile forward-looking adjusted EPS guidance to GAAP EPS. AbbVie cites uncertainty around contingent consideration, impairments, acquisition costs, litigation and taxes. Investors should not fill the gap with an assumed fixed adjustment or interpret the adjusted range as a prediction of GAAP earnings. 1
For the next quarter, watch whether Skyrizi and Rinvoq continue to offset Humira's decline and whether contingent consideration and integration costs keep the reported-to-adjusted EPS gap wide. The next reconciliation must be built from the next disclosure rather than extrapolated from Q3.
Our Danaher Q3 2026 analysis examines a different GAAP-versus-adjusted earnings issue driven by tax items. The common principle is to start with the reported statement, then check the issuer-specific reconciliation rather than treating all adjusted metrics as interchangeable.
AbbVie's Q3 results show why both measures matter. Reported EPS recovered from a low base, adjusted EPS increased and key medicines grew. Yet the $3.82 adjusted figure still includes an acquired R&D charge. The useful question is not which EPS number is 'right', but which differences reflect operating performance, deal accounting or future obligations.
